Creatures
Today marks the last day before the barge comes so we had a carbolicious breakfast of fried eggs (for some it was only one egg- aka pickle boy 🥒), grits, and our daily bread. No more peanut butter, so we had to make do with its worse cousin, sunflower seed butter. After breakfast, everyone headed their separate ways to continue work on their research projects.
Our group headed out to the beach across the street for our second round of collecting sand samples. This time around was not as easy as anticipated and we spent half the time surfing on each other’s backs to collect our sediment samples under water. With an impressive display of water aerobics we were finally able to get the samples and frolic in the ocean.
For lunch we had an unusual casserole presumably made of leftovers. Whatever they did worked, because all plates were cleaned. After that it was back to the lab where everyone reported their progress. The damselfish group visited the reef at the pipe every 2 hours from 7am-5pm and are done collecting data. The fish richness and abundance group visited the nearby lithified sand reef to collect data to compare to a coral reef. The flamingo tongue group was unfortunately forced to stay in due to strong wave action. We finished promptly with the sediment samples and identified numerous new species not seen at the last site.
After a loooong day of collecting data most of us took a reprieve to our nice, saunas of a room, except the damselfish group (dubbed the complainers) who I don’t think we saw dry the whole day 😬. With a needed break we headed to dinner where we had cabbage, rice, beans, 1 chicken leg (NOT 2, rookie mistake by Angie), the best red-40 drink, and my favorite- canned pairs. We filled our tummies and headed to good ol’ lab 4 where Mike gave us an invigorating paper on large scale degradation of coral reefs, in which we were reminded more of how we are killing our planet! 🤗 🎣 🐠 After class, everyone went their separate ways, some retiring to bed (boo), and others watching the very fitting movie Surfs Up!
Until Next Time 🫡,
Toby and Kailee
