Waving Goodbye to San Sal
Today was a sad day for all of us. We had to say goodbye to the island we have called home for the past 3 weeks. Some of us started off our morning with a short hike to our favorite sunrise spot. We enjoyed each others company and watched the sun come up over the clouds.
Then we enjoyed a pancake and bacon breakfast and found out that we didn't have to leave for our flight until 2pm. Most of us took our extra free time to continue working on our research proposals and finish up some packing. A few others went out for a final swim in Graham's Harbor. We enjoyed a final lunch and then gathered our belongings onto trucks with our St. Olaf compatriots and headed for the airport.
We jammed out in the back of the truck for one last time, and pulled into the airport not quite ready to say goodbye. After getting checked in we made one last stop at Wendy's Snack Shack for some treats and dominoes.
Our flight was a little delayed due to weather, but eventually we were on our way. The plane was filled with only Lutes and student from St. Olaf, so it made for a fun flight out. As we flew over the island we all looked out onto our favorite places we visited and reminisced, some tears may have even been shed. Upon arrival in Nassau we said our goodbyes to St. Olaf, and then some of us headed over to baggage services to report that our bags were left in San Salvador. This is a common occurrence as the planes are very small.
We then headed to our hotel, only to find out that we each have our own room to relax in for the next two nights. Then we ventured out to find some dinner, with half the group going to the Irish Pub and the other half in search of some fish fry. The fish fry group ran into a local who directed us to "the taste of the Bahamas," while a bit unsure at first, we ended up having an absolutely incredible dinner filled with lots of conch.
Now it's time for us to unwind for the night and enjoy a long awaited hot shower and some time to catch up with the world we have missed over the past few weeks. Thanks San Sal, we are really going to miss you.
